STRESS COUNSELLING & MANAGING STRESS
STRESS MANAGEMENT & THERAPY
Stress is one of the most common mental health problems in Australia. A recent study by Medibank found just under five million Australians were suffering from stress.1
In small amounts, stress can be tolerated and can even be helpful in meeting a challenge or deadline. However, prolonged or intense stress levels can negatively impact our relationships and our work performance.
Chronic and severe stress can increase the risk of developing depression, anxiety, substance abuse or a range of other mental disorders.
SYMPTOMS OF STRESS
Stress triggers our ‘fight or flight’ response preparing the body to take action against potential danger. Hormones such as adrenaline and cortisol are released, causing heart rate, breathing and metabolism to increase. This works well for a short time, but if the stress response goes on for too long, it can have damaging effects on the mind and body.
Commons signs of stress include physical symptoms such as heart palpitations, fatigue, sleep disturbance, insomnia, stomach upset, diarrhoea, frequent headaches, muscular aches and pains, weakened immune system, high blood pressure and psychological symptoms such as worry, fear, anger, tearfulness, irritability, anxiety, helplessness, difficulties with concentration or memory, or feeling overwhelmed.
